alternate title: (where has all the journalism gone?)
I am going to start with the bold statement, “journalism is dead, and the free press killed it.” I can’t help but wonder if a journalistic association is going to jump all over this statement, which I plan to use often, and seek a retraction and demand an apology. This will only serve to further prove my point. A true journalist would look at this statement, examine the argument I am about to make, and will continue to make until journalistic integrity is restored. Once this is done, then I will have no problem revising the statement. If the repairs are met, and the statement is revised, then there is no need for me to apologize. For if an apology is still sought, then the problem was really never fixed.
How can I say journalism is dead? One only needs to read an article written from the Associated Press (AP) for an answer, or listen to any news radio’s “special report,” or listen or read the analysis given by once reputable news agencies such as CNN. When 24 hour news channels first started one could pull a good hour out of it and be left satisfied, then it was 30 minutes, then 15 minutes. However, as the stations went around the world faster and faster, we are currently left with nothing that would pass for news 10 years ago. We have sadly come to the state where these channels programs are an unfunny post 9/11 adaptation of Dennis Miller’s take on the news from Saturday Night Live in the 80’s. There is little doubt left in my mind who Mr. Reilly’s really journalistic heroes were, or rather, still are. An in-depth analysis now seems to be a repeat of the reporters’ incompetent peers. I used to think that there was a puppet master behind the scenes feeding analysis to the reporters across the industry, a vast conspiracy to reshape our perception of the world by manipulating our prime ideal. Now I am more inclined to think that the news we are given today resemble more the effect of pointing two mirrors at each other than some grand conspiracy. I would have preferred the conspiracy, because that would be a sign of intelligence, and where there is intelligence then there is something that can be reasoned with. Unfortunately, after watching any morning show on any channel, you will have the sinking notion that we are dealing with the intelligence of a reflection. To further compound the problem, what we are dealing with has the reasoning, analytic skills, and concern for the state of being as a reflection.
As time goes on I will post more examples of this general incompetence in reporting and the face we call modern journalism. Please, do not mention the Daily Show or the Colbert Report, I feel no need to insult them or what they do by labeling them journalists or a news show. I hope one day the terms for journalism and news programs will be rehabilitated enough to be honored by using them as labels for the last hour on television devoted to making sense of this all. Until then I can only help by calling attention to the scam we know as the press corp. I intend to make the concept of “free press” to be more about freedom than worth.
